The size of your bag is perhaps the most important thing to consider when choosing which one to purchase. I once bought a bag that was way too big for me to carry and ended up struggling to various degrees throughout the duration of a 7-month long trip.

As a newbie hiker, you likely won’t have the whole packing thing down and that’s ok! 60 L and above will allow you to carry more, though I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners. Even the sturdiest packs become difficult to carry after some time.

20-40L hiking backpacks would be best suited as daypacks, though they can be used for longer trips if you have somewhere to stay or are with someone carrying heavier gear. 

 

Type

The type of backpack you get should, like size, be dependent on the type of hiking/traveling you intend to do. Are you going on a day trip? A weekend trip? A long-term endless adventure?
