Let’s face it, cameras are NOT cheap. When I first started photographing, I was actually SHOCKED at how expensive my newfound hobby was. 

But trust me when I say that for the most part, it’s 100% worth the investment. My content and blogging success notably increased when I finally took the leap and got a full-frame camera. 

While other factors were definitely at play, the difference a high-quality blogging camera has made has been worth every cent. Here’s why a high-quality camera is so important for bloggers:

Let’s face it, brands are not going to want to hire someone with a lame camera.

It doesn’t matter how great your written content is. If the photos don’t match, brands will seek out someone who has both.

A professional camera (and the knowledge to go with it) is an asset you can sell in your pitches

How to Choose the Best Camera for Blogging 

Every camera is unique, with its own benefits and downfalls. While some clearly have more pros than cons, you should definitely consider these universal features when choosing a camera for blogging. 

Portability

Lugging around a heavy AF camera is not going to make blogging fun, and will most likely have you resorting to your phone instead. 

While I’m not saying you should default to only blogging with a GoPro or something similar, a compact mirrorless camera is going to be more useful than a massive DSLR.

This is especially true if you’re a travel blogger!

You’ll definitely want a camera that can fit in your hiking backpack.

LCD Screen 

These days, most cameras have an LCD screen that moves somewhat, though the exact amount can vary.

Personally, I love LCD screens that flip all the way to the left, like what you can find on “vlogging” cameras like the Sony ZV-1. 

Fully-articulating LCD screens are essential if you plan to vlog on Youtube as they allow you to see yourself as you talk to the camera AND get shots from more creative angles.

However, most cameras reviewed here have a partially movable LCD screen, which is more than enough for blogging photography. 

Lowlight Performance 

This is perhaps one of the most important features you can consider when buying a camera for blogging.

“Low light” refers to as you might have guessed, poor lighting conditions where a high ISO will be essential. 

ISO is your camera’s sensitivity to light.

Therefore, those with good low-light performance will be able to shoot at high ISO values (such as above 6,000) with little to no “noise.”

Noise= noticeable grain in photos

Overall, full-frame options tend to perform better than APS-C or point and shoot cameras due to the fact that their larger sensors naturally allow more light in.

Yet even amongst FF choices, there are major differences.

The Sony A7iii is particularly fabulous at handling low-light, though the lens you choose to pair with it also matters. 

Does it Have 4K Video?

Even if you don’t consider yourself a vlogger, video quality is important when choosing a camera.

Not only could you decide to start a YouTube channel in the future, but you could also use video content on your blog to highlight your written content.

4K Video is essential in 2021 as video quality standards are only going to increase, and a quality camera is bound to have it.

Autofocus (AF) Performance 

To get the sharpest photos for your blog, you’re going to want to pick a camera that has GOOD autofocus, also known as AF.

A good blogging camera will be able to intelligently focus on the subject and pick up on facial features as well.

I’ve been so frustrated in the past dealing with cameras and lenses that were unable to focus quickly enough.

In travel blogging especially, many street scenes may only give you a moment to capture them. 

Be sure to check the number of focus points when choosing your new camera, though overall AF reviews are important as well. 

Image Stabilization 

If you’re not using a tripod 100% of the time, internal image stabilization is a real factor you need to consider when buying a camera for blogging. 

This will allow you to take crisp and clear hand-held images, which is seriously important in photography.

No one will take you seriously if you have a blog or Youtube filled with blurry pics or shaky videos. 

Even so, there are some amazing cameras on this list that do not have this feature.

That doesn’t mean all hope is lost–there are TONS of lenses to choose from that offer this feature, which is usually designated as OSS. 

For the sharpest handheld images, consider buying both a camera AND a lens with internal stabilization.

However, my main lens doesn’t contain OSS (though my camera does) and I’ve still been able to take amazing shots while traveling and living in Pakistan.

External Mic Support 

Once again, even if you feel that you’re definitely not interested in vlogging or video content, that could soon change.

And if/when it does, you’re going to need an external mic.

As great as the internal audio quality is on many of the cameras mentioned in this guide, none quite match up to the expert-level sound of an external microphone, which is typically inserted through a microphone port.

Many cameras also have a separate headphone port that allows you to monitor the audio.

While you might think that ALL cameras have this feature, here is a reminder that this is NOT the case. Always check this out before making a purchase.

What are your lens options? 

Point and shoot cameras come with a (usually extendable) internal lens. So basically, that’s all you’ll ever be able to use with it.

Mirrorless and DSLR options allow you to use MANY lenses of varying focal lengths. For newbies, the focal length is how far you can shoot from. 

For example, a 50 mm lens is ideal for street photography and daily life while a 200-600 mm zoom lens is what you’d use for animal or sports photography.

Point & Shoot 

Point and shoot cameras have an internal zoom lens that CANNOT be removed (though accessories to change the focal length are sometimes possible.) 

These very light, compact and easily portable devices are perfect for beginners and/or bloggers who shoot a lot of video content. 

These days, many have fully articulating LCD screens meaning you can easily film yourself talking to take quality selfies. 

While point and shoots used to be completely automatic, modern versions like the Sony ZV-1 or the Canon G7X MII offer both intelligent automatic modes and the ability to manually set the settings: ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture.

Mirrorless

They’re the technological upgrade from traditional DSLRs as they have an electronic viewfinder, and work without reflex mirrors. 

Today’s top mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7RIII  full-frame and the Sony A6400 APS-C offer full manual control, great low-light performance and extremely high-quality images all while weighing significantly less than DSLRs. 

Mirrorless cameras offer bloggers image stabilization and incredible video quality.

The only downside compared with DSLRs is notably shorter battery life and fewer lens options. 

DSLR

DSLR cameras are usually used by professionals, especially these days when top full-frame mirrorless cameras can produce the same quality shots.

DSLR’s are heavy, bulky, and $$$.

The Fujifilm X-S10 has to be considered amongst the best cameras for bloggers as It offers great ease of use, size, and several other features. 

I only recently decided to finally upgrade from a point and shoot to a proper camera to better capture all the best areas of Cartagena, Colombia and I have not been disappointed.

What I like about the Fuji X-S10 is it was easy for me to pick up and use, while offering me a lot of room to grow as I learn as well, making it a great camera for new bloggers.

The in-camera filters called Film Simulations make the photos look great right out of the memory card. 

The Vivid Simulation is great for my Instagram feed.  Not having to edit the photos before putting them up on my blog saves time.

Sony RX100 V

The Sony RX100 range of upmarket pocket cameras was originally introduced way back in 2012 and remains a great camera for travel blogging.

It was an immediate hit with active travel bloggers who wanted something lightweight (300 grams) that they could stick in their back pocket or hip pack and still come back with enough material for a decent social media video.

The last in the range so far is the RX100 VII from 2019, but the camera which really hits the sweet spot for travel photographers and videographers is the RX100 V (or the slightly newer VA).

The Nikon D750 is the perfect entry-level pro camera for bloggers who have outgrown their crop sensor camera, or for those who want something a little more future-proof.

The D750 is ideal in a range of situations, from travel to food photography, so it suits lifestyle bloggers perfectly.

I pair mine with a 24-70mm f2.8 lens for travel and it is often the only lens I need in most situations. I am able to capture both landscapes and details really well.

Back at home, I most often pair the D750 with a 50mm f1.8 lens and pop it on a tripod. I can then connect it wirelessly to my phone when arranging still life shots – this also works really well for self-portraits! Another great feature for bloggers who travel a lot is the super-long battery life.

Often, if I’m only going to be away for 3-5 days, I won’t even bother to pack my charger as I know the battery will last the distance!

A tripod is essential if you plan on doing any sit-down vlogging or astrophotography. It holds your camera steady which is ESSENTIAL in many situations, including time-lapses. 

For travel blogging, a sturdy yet lightweight tripod is a must. Carbon fibre options are the lightest these days, but often cost over $500.

I’ve been using the Manfrotto BeFree Travel Tripod for a while now and absolutely love it. It’s light enough to carry on all my adventures but can also hold up to 10 lbs of weight. 

It’s joined me on a 700+ mile motorbike trip (attached to the luggage rack) and still does what it needs to do.
